Parador La Granja
The four-star Parador La Granja sits at the foot of the pine covered Sierra de Guadarrama just a 50 minute. drive from Madrid. The Parador is actually two newly refurbished (opened June 1, 2007) historical buildings. The first is the Casa de los Infantes, constructed in the 18th century by Carlos III for the princes Gabriel and Antonio. This building is where the hotel accommodations are situated. The second is the Cuartel General de la Guardia de Corps (formerly the Royal Bodyguard barracks), which houses a modern conference center.

The Parador restaurant serves a fine cuisine in a classy setting. Recommended are Judiones de la Granja (large beans cooked in the local style), Truchas de Valsaín (local trout), cochinillo (suckling pig), cordero asado (roast lamb) and ponche de yema y mazapán (eggnog with marzipan).
The Parador has an inviting Spa and and other special leisure facilities like the indoor paddle court and an outdoor swimming pool in the gardens.
The town of San Idelfonso de La Granja, is a pretty little town just 11 kilometers from the World heritage city of Segovia. It has an idyllic feel in it’s mountain location, yet contains a rich architectural legacy, and one of the grandest Royal Palaces in Spain.
The Versailles-inspired palace & gardens built by Philip V in 1720 near the hermitage of San Idelfonso is magnificent, and well worth a visit.
Interesting day trips from the Aiguablava Parador include:
– Segovia (11 km.) with it’s incomparable Alcazar (castle), aqueduct, cathedral, and fine restaurants.
– Avila (77 km.) with it’s incredible Murallas (city walls), convents, and Gothic cathedral.
– El Escorial (34 km.) and the Valley of the Fallen.
– Pedraza (51 km.) Walled medieval town.
– And of course, Madrid which is less than an hour away.
