Chinchon is a little-known gem of a town.  The laid-back atmosphere of the unique main plaza conjures up images of what Spain must have been like a hundred years ago.  The Parador Chinchon is the perfect place for a restful stay. It was originally established as an Augustinian Convent in the 17th century, and was then called Santa Maria Del Paraiso.  It is still today a little slice of paradise ("paraiso").

Parador Chinchon Patio

The Parador of Chinchon has interspersed throughout; peaceful cloisters with fountains, gardens, quaint patios, and hallways adorned with the famous blue "azulejo" tiles from Talavera De La Reina. There is a wonderful fresco on the arched ceiling at the head of the stairs leading up from the reception area. The floors are tiled in terra cotta, and the bedrooms are light and airy with special touches – like the hand-painted golden garlands on the antique bedsteads. As well, magnificent tapestries hang on the walls in many of the public areas.

Viceroys and Countesses have stayed here at times in the Parador’s glorious past. This is one of the "classiest" of the Paradors, and is located in a town with much to recommend it. The Parador is situated just a few steps away from the main plaza in the heart of the old quarter.

Chinchon plaza

Chinchon was founded by the Carpathians even before the Romans came. It was then controlled by a succession of rulers; the Visigoths, the Moors, then the re-conquest put it in the hands of Christian Spain. King Philip V was inaugurated on the main plaza here.

Interesting places to visit in Chinchon;

– Chinchon is justifiably famous for its cuisine, and the nearby Madrilenos make special trips here (it’s 45 min. from Madrid) just in order to dine. Chincon is known for its roasts, and of course for the anisette liqueur that is famed all over Spain. Any of the several restaurants located on the main plaza will fill the bill; Asador El Torreon, Meson Cuevas Del Vino, Asador Jardin de la Condesa, La Balconada, or the Parador itself.

– The main plaza is one of the most picturesque in Spain.It is round (serves as a bullring during the annual feria), and surrounded by wooden balconies typical of the area. There are 234 of these balconies – called "claros."

– While on the plaza, don’t miss the 15 century Church of the Ascension. It has an interesting mix of Gothic and Baroque styles, as well as a masterpiece painting by Goya.

– The Lope De Vega theater, the Ethnological Museum, the 16th century Clarisas Convent, and the 17th century Casa de las Cadenas (once the residence of King Philip V) are other interesting places to visit.

– The remnants of an old castle on the highest point around – the Condes castle – is well worth a look around.

Interesting Day and Half-Day trips from Parador Chinchon;

– Madrid: The capital is only 45 min. away, and of course provides much to see and do; the Prado museum (one of the world’s finest), the Reina Sophia Modern Art museum (also one of the world’s finest), the Royal Palace, the Retiro Park, Plaza Mayor, and so much more.

– Cuenca: This World Heritage city is about an hour away, and is a fascinating place to visit with it’s famous "hanging houses," and the incredible Huecar Gorge.

– Aranjuez: Just 20 minutes away – has two Royal Gardens that are extensive and very beautiful. One can spend many pleasant hours wandering through these lush oases.

– Toledo: The former capital of Spain is a wonderful city for visitors – about a 45 min drive from Chinchon.

Parador Chinchon is a favorite of many Parador aficionados. Its a very special place to stay while visiting Chinchon – one of Spain’s most attractive small towns.
